Church Mission Statement

Based on Luke 10:27, “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’, and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’”(NIV) , we will walk the way of the Lord with the following church missions:

   1) A church open to all individuals;

   2) A church to pursue peace in Hiroshima, site of the atomic bomb;

   3) As a church tonurture the next generation.

(Adopted as our Church Missions at an annual general meeting held on May 13, 2012)

Our Beliefs

We, Japan Baptist Hiroshima Christ Church (Hiroshima Baptist Church), believe that we must love and honor God and love our neighbors.  We accept God’s unconditional love, listen to our Lord Jesus Christ and his teachings, worship our Lord, and proclaim Him Lord and Savior.  We, sharing our neighbor’s joys and pains, shall aim at becoming a church that values others.

 We, as a church, being open to all individuals, shall listen to what the community and adjacent churches need and establish a friendship full of grace.

 We will pursue peace, based on the peace sought for at the atomic bomb site.  We shall serve the world community in order to achieve peace, sanctity of life, and accommodation.

 We, without fear of change, shall aim at becoming a mature flock of sheep, consisting of members from children to the elderly with hope.

Church Membership  Presently 140

Brief History

Gospel-preaching began in 1919 by a missionary sent to Hiroshima by the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), USA.  During World War II, the church continued to hold services.  When the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, the church building was destroyed.  After the bombing, it was discovered that 6 of the church members had died in the blast.  In 1946, we acquired a construction site for a new church.  In 1947, the church joined the Japan Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Convention donated a chapel to the church in 1948.

The church has been relocated 3 times over the years. It was first in Senda-machi, then Naka-machi and finally Funairi-machi (current location).

Presently
Based on the previously stated missions, we are still attempting to completely reform a system which is free from the traditional approach or old way. So, we have lots of work to do. In 2019, we have celebrated the 100th anniversary of missionary work in Hiroshima. Therefore, we set up ‘Hiroshima Baptist Church Commemorating Committee of the 100th Anniversary of Missionary Work in Hiroshima’. As one of the anniversary memorial projects, we translated the book written in Japanese, ‘Kataritsugu –watashi-no hibaku-taiken (2006)–‘ into English with our own hands and publish it. Our wish was for readers to deepen their thoughts about the importance of peace and to renew their perception of the stupidity of war and the cruelty of nuclear weapons.

Characteristics of the Hiroshima Baptist church are as follows:

 Our church is the Baptist Church that values individual identity and independence. The Baptist Church is a Congregational Church. Our church was established based on the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).

  Gospel-preaching in Japan began in 1889 by a missionary sent to Japan by the Southern Baptist Convention.  After many changes, the Japan Baptist Convention, as described later, was formed in 1947.

  Gospel-preaching in Hiroshima began in 1919 by a missionary sent to Hiroshima by SBC.  During World War II, the church continued to hold services.  When the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, the church building was destroyed.  After the bombing, it was discovered that 6 of the church members had died in the blast.  In 1946, we acquired a construction site for a new church.  In 1947, the church body joined the Japan Baptist Convention and in turn the Southern Baptist Convention donated a chapel to the church in 1948. The church has been relocated 3 times over the years. It was first in Senda-machi, then Naka-machi and finally Funairi-machi (current location).

Characteristics of the Baptist church are as follows:

1)   To value the Bible,

2)    Jesus Christ-centered faith,

3)    Baptism with individual and independent confession of faith (baptism by immersion under water),

4)    Standing on the principle of “priesthood of all believers”, we will not allow class discrimination between pastor(s) and believers,

5)    Based on congregationalism, we will manage a democratic church administration,

6)    Standing on the principle of “Separation of Church and State”, as is strictly guaranteed by Article 20 in the Constitution of Japan, we will eliminate intervention by the State.
